The Waitara, Mail reports:—MiFrank Clare, while fishing off the Mokan heads last evening from the launch Mahoe, caught a very large skate, measuring about 6 feet from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail, and about 5 loot wide, Mr Clare 1 had two sclinapper hooked at the time, and had a fairly large load on his line. With the assistance of other hands the monster was landed. The fish is said to be the largest caught on this coast, and has attracted considerable attention during the day.

At a meeting of the Timaru Hospital Board yesterday the chairman said a donation of £l3 16s had been received, the proceeds of a street collection made by some visiting firemen while in Timaru for tho recent competitions. They asked that the money he used for the relief of a distressed local family. It was very gratifying, the chairman said, to see visitors to town showing such kindly thought for the less fortunate in the community. He thought they were deserving of the Board’s heartiest appreciation, and also the appreciation of the whole community. He moved that the Board place on record their appreciation of the firemen’s kindly thoughtfulness, and that a letter of thanks be sent them.' This was unanimously agreed to.
