RECENT WATER-FRONT STRIKE. Fku Press Association. Hamilton, March 13. Considorahlo expense was involved in the mobilisation of the Waikato special constables lor service at the water front at Auckland during the strike, and a large number of accounts, involving a big sum, yet remain unpaid. These have been rendered to the Hamilton branch ot the If armors* I nion, wno have no lunds, and, in any case, would refuse to pay. A deadlock has arisen, while dlic creditors meantime, remain unpaid. The position was discussed at the local branch of the Farmers’ XJn. ion yesterday, when the attitude of he Auckland Provincial Council in tenying liability or responsibility for ..he mobilisation was strongly condemned. The secretary, Mr Cribble, stated that instructions from the Auckland branch authorised him to spare no expense, as there was plenty of money in Auckland for the purpose. It was mentioned that several creditors threatened to proceed for recovery, ’Sin which chse the local branch decided;,to sue the Auckland branch. Meantime a committee had been set up to wait on the provincial executive. It was also mentioned that a large number of horses lent Tor the use of the ( specials had been lost, and the nailers were claiming for their replacement from the branch. Air Young, M.P., and the secretary interviewed the Premier on the subject. Air Massey refused to open the matter personally, but recommended the people concerned to present a petition to the House, when the whole 1 matter would ho gone into.
AMBULANCE SATURDAY. Wellington, March 11. Ambulance Saturday was held in fine weather, with very satisfactory results,, a total of £2lO 8s Id being collected, as against £97 in May last. A MOTORIST ARRESTED. Auckland, March 11. A man named Hugh McGcochon was knocked down by a motor-car and received painful injuries to his head. A mini her of pedestrians who witnessed the accident called out to the driver of the car, and an attempt was made to stop him. One of 'the bystanders jumped on to the motor ns it passed aim, but was unable to make the driver pull up. A. policeman at Wellesley Street realised what was happening, and ho managed to bring the car to a stand-still. The driver of the car was arrested, and was driven to the police station in bis own car, the services of a chaffeur from the taxi-stand near by being requisitioned to take him to the lock-up. THE FREEZING INDUSTRY. - Masterton, March 11. The Wellington Farmers’ Moat Company has decided to increase its capital by £OO,OOO, to enable provision to be made for increased storage capacity at Waingawa works lor another 100,000 sheep.
