Christchurch advices state that Bishop Grimes had undergone an operation for appendicitis in Sydney, and <. that his condition is serious.—P.A.
The Rev. J. C. Davies, of Normanby, was presented by members of his congregation on Friday night with a purse of sovereigns prior to his departure from Pongaroa. .
Mr J. R. Kirk, ex-Mayor oi Gisborne, who was a member of the Royal Commission on Education in and is at present a member of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, has been nominated by the latter body as a candidate for a seat on the National Council of Education.
An old Maori named Teiki, who had some claim to distinction, passed away at Otakoho" during the week. The correspondent of the Hawera Star says:—"His age has been variously stated, but I believe that he was about 90 year's of age. He was one of the fast disappearing Maoris of the olden days. As one of Titokowaru's warriors, he took part in actions with Te Kuiti, and if the claim made locally is to be believed, Teiki was the warrior who at Te-Ngutu-o-te-Manu shot the late Major Von Tempsky. At the tangi held here, over two hundred Maoris attended, from as far afield as Waitotara and Parihaka."
