STANLEY ROAD PICNIC.

The children of the Stanley Road School were not favored with the best of weather for their annual picnic, which was held in Mr Hosking's paddock on Thursday, hut, notwithstanding, there was a large attendance of children and adults, and .everything went with a swing. The races were well contested, some close finishes resulting. The usual games were got off, and the sheep and pig weight-guessing competitions were won respectively by Messrs P. H. Wellington and Benefield, who kindly donated their prizes to the Belgian Fund. The social in the evening drew a large attendance and was most enjoyable, the dancing being interspersed with games and singing. Misses M. Foley and V. Sangster (two pupils of tho Stratford District High School) gave a duet, "Men of Harlech," Miss Sangster playing the accompaniment, and Captain Allen gave some of his; liest patriotic recitations, "The Three Men of Battery L," which was very, touching. Miss Sangster sang very 1 well "She is far from the Land," and was equally good in her singing of "The Minstrel Boy." Mr Tom Sullivan proved himself a good comedian.' The dance music was supplied by Miss Anderson, of Midhirst. Mr R. Masters (member of the Taranaki Education Board) was present during the evening.) The sheep and produce, etc., presented to tho Fund, were sold by Mr Lamason, and realised about £l2, the Belgian Fund benefiting to the extent of somewhere near £2O on the day. The committee wish to thank all donors and helpers, and especially Captain Allen and Mrs Leathain (who supplied the piano), and the ladies who provided such an excellent supper at the social.
