FIRES.
TWO HOUSES DESTROYED. -\ Per Press Association. Christchurch, March 15. A fire at Lyttelton early yesterday morning destroyed two houses on the Governor's Bay Road occupied by A. V. Williams and J. OE. Thompson respectively, and owned by A. Jones, Christchurch. Williams' house was the first to go, and the occupants had a narrow escape, Williams being slightly singed. The water supply was inadequate, and the brigade was unable to prevent the flames spreading. The Waimate West County Council's tar-boiling plant was discovered to. be on lire at 7.30 on Saturday morning (states the Manaia correspondent of the Hawera Star). The fire brigade was powerless to extinguish tbe flames, and the plant, containing 400 gallons of tar, and the shed, were totally destroyed. The cause of the fire (whether through boiling over or otherwise) is unknown, and the damage is estimated at about £6O.
