THE BELGIAN APPEAL
HANDSOME DONATIONS FROM NEW SOUTH WALES.
United Pbksb Association. (Received 10.20 a.m.) Sydney, March 13
Since the public meeting, £IOOO monthly has been promised to the Belgian Fund, exclusive of £7OOO in straight-out donations. Organised collections are proceeding. The Belgian Consul has cabled to Sir T. A. Coghlan (Agent-General) for a further £40,000, including £23,357 of a subsidy. The total amount that has been remitted is £184,000.
Concerning the uneasiness in the public mind regarding the destination of the subscriptions, the Consul stated that the money goes direct to the Belgian Ambassador in London, who amply assured him that the money was strictly used for the relief of the Belgians in Belgium.
The New South Wales executive committee has asked the Consul to amalgamate his amount with the national fund, and avoid confusion.
