AN EMPIRE NECESSITY.
FARMERS URCED TO SOW CEREALS Pbb Pbess* Association. Wellington, March 11. The Board of Agriculture would like to remind farmers of the great necessity in the interests of the Empire that wheat-areas, should be largely augmented to ensure the crop of wheat in the coming season being sufficient to feed the people of New Zealand, and to leave enough for seed for the following season. At least 240,000 acres will be required to be sown. The area of wheat during the present season has been 189,000 acres, so that 50;000 acres "more will require to be Bown in the*cOming season to ensure sufficient for the Dominion's use. Less would probably mean we should have to buy from outside and from other countries possibly less favored than ourselves. As restrictions as to price have been taken off by the Government, there is every reason to think the will be remunerates. The Board would also like to suggest that those who intend to sow wheat in the coming season could procure seed grown in the Dominion, as imported wheat requires a cons» ler. ; able time to acclimatise and genori.ly gives an unsatisfactory yield for the first season. The Board would caution farmers,, however, that the above, aroa should not he deducted from the aroa usefully devoted to oats—-if this bo done, the oats and chaff grown will not be sufficient.
