• 'Wellington, March.] 1. General Godley, in a letter to the Minister of Defence (Hon. J. Allen) states that the attack of the " Turks on the day they arrived on the Suez Canal was very feeble. If the Turks suceeed in making any better effort, he expects'that-the rest of the New Zealanders will go also. The satis, factory part is that out of the whole Army Corpse-one infantry brigade be-
ing required—-New" Zealanders should | have been the one'brigade selected to go."
General Godley adds: "We" are much amused at your cable about the throat-cutting episode in the low quarters of Cairo. I expect some wag has been pulling the newspapers' legs. As a matter of fact, our men get on extremely well with all the Egyptians. There have been practically no instances with us even of brawls with the Natives.
General Godley also refers to the rumor about gifts being sold in canteens as a mare's nest.
