ENEMY'S REPORT OF THE CANAL
OPERATIONS.
“PITCHED BATTLE OF 30 HOURS.” -
United Press Association. (Received 0.55 a.in.) Cario, March 9.
Djemal Pasha’s despatch to Constantinople describes the reconnoitring at Suez Canal as an exploit in which he hoped to make a stand until the main troops arrived. He adds: “We had crossed the Canal and bayonetted the enemy when a sandstorm interfeied with the operations. Six cruisers opened a horrible flanking fire, and armoured trains used quick firers; but in spite of this we fought a pitched battle for thirty hours, success being on onr side, and then wo reined calmly.”
OLD SOUTH AFRICAN SOLDIERS HOLD INDIGNANT MEETING.
Melbourne, March 10. The South African Soldiers’ Association has received the following cable from Cairo: “At an indignation meeting of old South Africans, a resolution was carried emphatically resenting and denying Captain Bean’s statements as pernicious and unwarranted. Please contradict reports.”
