FIREMEN'S RISKY JOB

A lire broke out in the Harbor Board explosive stores this morning. Probably it occurred through chemical action and the leakage of phosphorus from tins and ignition on exposure to the air. The store was full of explosives, gasolene and cylinders of compressed air, and the firemen had an extremely difficult task before the outbreak was overcome. The damage was slight.
"THE TOWERS" HOTEL CUTTED
Auckland, March 8
The private hotel, "The Towers," in Newmarket, was partially destroyed by fire on Saturday night, one wing of the house, which contained 'Jo rooms, being gutted. The Newmarket brigade reel capsized while rounding a corner, and two men were slightly injured. The others proceeded to the fire without appliances. The city brigade arrived and assisted to extinguish the fire. The building was owned by N. Nielsen, and was insured in the Phoenix for £1200; the contents in the same office for £4OO. The estimated damage to the building is £IOOO. The proprietor, W. Potter, left the building a few minutes before the outbreak.
