RUSSIANS ON THE OFFENSIVE IN POLAND, v FURIOUS BATTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS, United Prebs Association. (Received 8.55 a.m.) Petrograd, March 3. Official: Our offensive on the Niemen and Vistula continues. We made a successful advance south-west of Grodno, the Germans resisting stubbornly. A furious all-day battle in the Carpathians between Ondawsan culminated 'in hand-to-hand fighting. There* were enormous Austrian losses, and many detachments were annihilated", the slopes of the mountains and ravines being strewn with Austrian dead.
