The first practice of the season by the Stratford Operatic Society will be held in St. Andrew’s Hall on Monday night at 7.30 sharp. It is desired that all members and intending members should attend.

Weather Forecast. —Westerly winds strong to gale and veering by west to south. The weather appears likely to be cloudy and unsettled with rain probable. Barometer falling, but rising after about 20 hours.—Bates, Wellington.

The Eltham Friendly Societies’ annual picnic and sports to take place at Taumata Park, Eltham, on Thursday next should attract a large crowd. In the evening a euchre party and dance will bo held. It is anticipated a large number of Stratford residents will make the journey.

A meeting of the Stratford Swimming Club was held last night, when it was decided to hold their second grand illuminated carnival on the evening of March 18th. A large and varied programme was drawn up, and judging by the outside support already promised, some very good racing will be witnessed.' Details of the programme will appear later.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 23rd instant: —Tallow—W;o quote the present spot values for the following descriptions: Fine mutton 42s per cwt, good beef 40 9d per cwt, mixed 38s per cwt. The market is strong.

Westport reports. a flood in the Buller river to-day which has stopped shipping movements'. Two spans of the Inangahua bridge were washed away last night. From lleefton it is reported that heavy rain fell last night, the bridge (it Capleston being destroyed, and great damage done all over.

Nominations for Candidates to sit on the Stratford Licensing Bench closed at noon to.day. The following live candidates were nominated:— William H'athaway, Midhirst, farmer; Athol Meredith, Strathmore, farmer; William Morrison, Ngaere, settler; John Bangham Richards, Stratford, land agent; Courtney Dotson Sole, Stratford, papcrhaugor. Owing to only five nominations being required, no election will be bald.

The Toko Settlers’ Picnic and Sports Executive have decided to engage the Stratford Municipal Brass Band for the Show on Thursday, 25th March. In view of the fact that the enjoyment of many depends upon the music at these functions, the hope is expressed that the Band will provide a specially attractive programme. All arrangements are well in hand for a successful show, and much enthusiasm is being shown by all members of the committee and the secretary, Mr G. E. Bocock.

“We all reckon New Zealand is the best country on earth now, after seeing these other places!” states Corporal Mann in a letter to the secretary of , the Stratford Patriotic Fund (Mr J. B. Richards), from Zeitoun Camp, Egypt. Messrs William Hathaway (chairman of the Stratford County Council and Athol Meredith (chairman of the Whangamomona County Council),-were to-day nominated for seats on the Stratford Licensing Committee. Both gentlemen have in the past done good service for their fellow-settlers on various public bodies. Mr Hathaway was formerly a member of the Hospital Board, and is chairman of the Tuna School Committee. Mr Meredith is a sitting member of the Hospital Board. The fact that they are willing to give their valuable time and services for the good of the community, on the Licensing Ben. ch, is a fresh proof of the high and deserved reputation for disinterestedness and impartiality; qualities that are essential to the just and fearless administration of the licensing laws.
