THE WANGANUI MEETING. (Notes by Cicero.) The Wanganui Jockey Club deserved a better response from owners for their Autumn Meeting than has resulted,

though the class ol horses engaged in both the Cup and Flying Handicap are well up to the average. Of the ten engaged in the Stewards. Astor (if started) and Banksia command respect.

The good acceptance of fourteen for the Petre Hack should provide a first-

class-class betting race, and in tins event Coldstream and Miraculous are nicely handicapped. A lot of moderate jumpers are en-

gaged in the Westmere Hurdles, and

of them the ex-hack hurdler Styrax, with 9.9 on his back, should stay on well and must be hard to beat.

Four only paid up for the Tayforth Hurdles, a race worth a stake of £l2O, and as nothing in the handicap stood

out prominently, one cannot understand the poor response. Xaupata showed great promise at Egmont ami should he make the improvement one would expect must give a lot of trouble to the rest of the bunch. The nice-sized field of ten figures in the Cup, winch, considering the nominations, is highly satisfactory. In-

digo'-(8.7) is a proved stayer, as his

dead heat with Warstep in the New Zealand Cup proves. Giving away 81 bs in weight lie ran that brilliant filly Pavlova to half a head in the Wellington Cup, which was run in the record time of 2.112. On this form, it will take something exceptionally good to lower his colors. Rewi Poto (8.7) is a really brilliant sort. His best performances over any distance of ground are his win in the Empire Handicap (one mile and a distance), Wanganui,

iii which he beat, amongst others. Leonto, Goldsize and Bertrada. In December last he won the Woodville

Handicap (if miles), but those behind the black were very moderate. On i Boring Day, under the welter weight of 10.2, Passadena luckily scored a win over the Taranaki horse in the Christmas Handicap, of 1J miles. Lo*\er down we come to Kilrain (8.5). Ho is very nicely treated, but has failed to reproduce the form displayed

by him twelve months ago. His best performances this season are third in the Manawatu Cup miles), won by Sir Knox, and second in the Consolation Handicap (If miles), won by Ogier, at the recent Trentham meeting, Sea Pink and Indigo being among the “also started” division in the lastnamed event. Byron (8.2) cannot complain on score of eight, but will be troubled by the distance if the pace is on. Rinaldo (8.0) is a much-fan-cied and discussed candidate. When trained by Murray Hobbs he was badly troubled in the wind, and many will be surprised if Tilley can get the Charlemagne colt to successfully run out fourteen furlongs. Goldsize (7.13) would possibly run a better ten furlong race, and may be troubled by the extra distance. Marshal MacDonald is a very uncertain customer. At the Auckland Summer Carnival he won the Racing Club Handicap by a head from Sea Pink, the twelve furlongs being left behind in 2.34, but since this performance he has failed to show up at all well. Moutoa Girl (0.10) carried three pounds more into second place behind Sinapis in last year’s contest for the race under review, but Master Lupin and Chaminade have nothing to recommend them for a race of this description. Indigo and Rewi Poto should run well.

Bisogne, who ran well for five fur-

longs in the Taranaki Stakes, is meeting a poor lot in the Juvenile Handicap.

A number of good “hacks” are on. gaged in the Wiritoa Handicap, and of them Austin and Patronymic read well.

A large number of first-class sprinters should face the starter for the Flying Handicap, and if they start Uinietor, Postillion and Ardent ought to provide a good contest.
