.Mr Canu states that the Norton Griffiths Co. underwrote the second New South Wales Joan of two million, [and he understands that the linn also underwrites a further two million. This is quite apart from the scheme whereby this firm undertakes to provide for reproductive work in New South Wales to the extent of ten million.
LIQUOR AMONG THE SOLDIERS.
Melbourne, February 18
A large deputation petitioned the State Premier to restrict the sale of intoxicating liquor to members of the Expeditionary Force by earlier closing of hotels.
Mr Peacock replied that he had no power to alter the closing time, and added that he thought the abolition of the wet canteens had a good deal to do with drinking in the city.
TASMANIAN WOOL SALES.
Hobart, February 16. At the wool sales there was keen competition, the prices being 2d to 3d better than in January. DESTRUCTIVE BUSH FIRES. Hobart, February 18. Serious bush fires are raging on the east and north-west coasts. Many homesteads and much cattle and stock have been destroyed. FIRE CAUSES £SOOO DAMAGE. Sydney, February 18. A line of business premises at Can Belago was destroyed by fire, the damage being estimated at £SOOO. FLINDERS COURT FIRE. fc - Melbourne, February 18. The top* floor of Gayland, Greenwood and Cooking’s premises in Flinders Court was gutted by fire, tbe damage being estimated at several thousand. SUMMERS LIBEL ACTIONS. London, February 17. The King’s Bench granted an application to consolidate the Summers libel actions against six newspapers, arising out of the light with Morey in Melbourne. * Loudon, February 17. “Jawley-Ford” beat “Once Australia’’ in tbe first round of the Waterloo Cup. , The Ayrshire has passed Dover. The three Australian Government trawlers, Brolya, Koraaga and Gunnndaal, have sailed. COMMONWEALTH BANK ROBBERY. Melbourne, February 18. In the case of Burvill « who wa charged with the theft of £2OOO worth of Commonwealth bank notes, the police gave evidence that tracing paper was used for replacing the notes to Burvill’s order from a Sydney firm. It is alleged that incriminating letters were found on accused.
