Miss I. Eise, the recently-appointed Art Instructor to the New Plymouth Technical School, began a course of instruction in the Stratford School yesterday.

Mr D. E. F. Pennefather was returned unopposed for Kirkdale, in the House of Commons, vice Mr Taylor, who resigned, states a London cablegram.

The Rev. Father Ormond has been forwarded by the Mayor of Auckland a' letter congratulating him, as a native of Auckland, upon receiving the important appointment of secretary to the Roman Catholic Apostolic delegate for Australia.

Mr W. A. Hewitt, manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Stratford, has agreed to act as judge of the grain and seeds departments at the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Autumn Show to be held in March.

Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P. for Taumaranui, joined the party of visiting Ohuraites at Stratford on Saturday, and left by train in the evening on his way to Te Kuiti, where the elec, tion petition proceedings regarding his election will be held on Monday next.

Father Ledochouski, a German Pole, has been elected General of the Order of Jesuits (known as the “Black Pope”), •in succession to Father Weruz, who died in August last. Strenuous efforts were put forth to defeat the French candidate, who was the favorite, and the decision rested with the Spanish vote, which, owing to the German position, suggested the election of Father Ledochouski as a compromise.
