DEPERDUSSIN ON TRIAL.
ALLEGED FRAUD. United Press Association. (Received 9.25 a.m.) Paris, February 14, Deperdussin, the aeroplane manufacturer, has been committed for trial on a charge of fraud.
(A cable of August Bth, 1918, from Paris, stated that strenuous efforts were being made to prevent the stoppage of the Deperdussin aeroplane works. The army possessed many Deperdussin machines, which were likely to become useless if the closure were applied, owing to the difficulty of testing and repairing the machines. Deperdussin said he had spent the money in aviation and had refused a large sum to sell his secrets to Germany.
A further cable on the 9th stated how Deperdussin deluded the bank when he was in financial difficulties. In 1902 he submitted a scheme for buying silk for cash and selling it to leading Parisian houses on credit. The profit was never below 12 per cent., of which he paid 8 per cent to the bank. He became intoxicated with success and turned to dishonest means. Ho speculated colossally and gained the confidence of the banks, whom he lulled into paying him a share of interest out of the , advances. He spent his money in sport and aviation enterprises, and had not seen a yard of silk for.._yeara~
