N.Z. LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY CO'S. REPORT.

The Z.N. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Stratford branch, report as follows : We held our usual monthly sale in our Kohuratahi yards on Friday, 2'Jth January, when we had a large yarding all the pens being full, of 501 head of cattle and 1637 sheep, most of which were disposed of at very full values for the sheep and current prices for the cattle. The attendance ras very large : —Store cows (poor) 45s io 82& 6d, 18 month heifers 43s 6d to 48s. 2i year steers (small) 81s, 2\ year steers (fair quality) from 107 s 6d H i26s, 20 month steers (small) 60s, medium (ii.,, good 765, bulls (small) 61s, iambs Ss Id to 8s 6, —no very good lines yarded, 2 tooth ewes 15s Id to 16s 4d. f.m. ewes up to 14s. 2 tooth wc:.!tfv« im fcni

15s 6d, 2 and 4 tooth wethers 16s lid, cull rams 8s Gd. Our next sale at this point will be on Wednesday, 17th February. On Monday, Bth February, we held our sheep fair at Stratford. There was only a small yarding, owing, mors or less, to the previous -lay being wc-t, so several lines did not cop e forward. Bidding was very brisk, and most lines were sold. Lambs, medium 7s 8d t» 7s lid, good up to 10s 4d, .tore ewes 13s, forward ewes 15s fid to 15s Bd, 4 tooth ewes 15s 6d to 16s lOd, .in. ewes (poor) 10s-sd, medium lis 9d to 14s 9d, mixed aged ewes lis 6d to 12.; 3d, old rams 10s 6d to 14s.

On Tuesday, 9th inst., we held our usual fortnightly sale in our Stratford yards, when there was a small yarding of 360 head of cattle, mostly small farmers' lines, which we -were able to place at a slight advance of previous ruling rates:—Good store cows made 120 s to 1335, medium cows 101 s to 118 s 6d, fat cows £7 5s to £9 17s, cows and calves £5 2s 6d to £6 19s, 3 year old heifers £6 4s to £6 10s, 18 month heifers 42s 6d to 49s 6d, 15 to 18 month bulls 43s to 60s, medium bulls £4 12s 6d to £6 Is.

On Wednesday, 10th inst., we held our monthly sale of wool, sheepskins, hides, tall6w, etc., when we had a fair catalogue of 652 packages of wool, etc., all farmers' produce. There was a large attendance of buyers and competition was extremely keen. Prices realised were high and up to and equal to outside markets. A number of the lines offered contained fern and biddy seed, which reduced their value cOnsierably, more especially this eyar, as Continental buyers, who usually purchase this class of wool, are not operating to any extent. With one or two exceptions we cleared the wool catalogue. The following are some of the brands offered and sold:—A F over T, seedy fleece, Bjd;' JXN, seedy, 9Jd; MYP, 1 fadge 10Jd; V under half circle, 2 bales' dingy fleece, lOd. This was passed'in at'our last "sale at B£d., LJG, 2 bales seedy and coarse, 9£d; J B over T, 2 bales fleece, seedy, 9|d; WEST HO bales, 2nd lambs, seedy ,9f d; T 5, 4 bales of fleece, little seedy, lOd; 0 5 bales lambs, short, little seedy, 10£d; BRAY, 5 bales fleece, little heavy and dingy, 9Jd; JAM over 0, 11 bales fleece wool, heavy, little fern seed, lOd; SW under a bar, 14 bales' Very nice fleece wool, lid ; 2 bales same brand 11 |d; G over L Y, 9 bales fleece, log stained, little fern seed, lOJd; same brandj 3'bales lambs, lid; G J over M, 5 bales'fleece, little heavy, lOd; C S under a halt' circle, 2 bales crossbred fleece, 102,d; A D, '2 bales crossbred lambs, small and short staple, 10£d. The following are the average prices realised:— Crossbred I flee"ce, fairly clean, 9ijd to lljd; seedy fleece 9d to 9Jd, dead wool 8d to 9Jd, lambs' wool 8d to lljd, pieces from 5d to 6£d, crutchings from 53d to 7|d, locks from 4\d to s£d, fleece wool in sacks from 9£d to 10-Jd, lambs lOd to lOid, crossbred pelts (poor) lid, medium Is 3d, fair 2s, salted pelts (fair wool) 4s 6d, damaged pelts (good wool) from 4s 9d to ss, lOd, full wooljed fair pelts, 7s, 9d to lis sd, good wool (poor pelts) 7s, damaged pelts (poor wool) 2s lOd to 3s lOd, •salted pelts up. to ss, good skins (small) Is 7d. Tallow in tins, 17s to 22s per cwt. Cowhides, light, 9d to 9Vd; yearling hides up to 9Jd; calfskins from 83'd to IOJ-d —no good lines catalogued; fleshy lOd. Our next wool and hide sale will be held on Tuesday, 9th March. Since we last reported we have sold a very large quantity of stock privately at the following prices:-—F.m. rams 21s, aged rams 12s, 2 tooth wethers 15s to 16s 6d, 2 and 4 tooth wethers 16s, f.m. ewes lis to 14s, 4 tooth ewes 18s, 2 tooth ewes 16s 6d, old ewes 9s to 12s, fat ewes*l7s 3d to 18s, store ewes 14s, shorn lambs (small) 6s to Bs, woolly lambs to lis 3d, rape lambs 9s to 0s 6d, fatcows : £6 to £7, store cows £5 15s,- weaner heifers 18s, 3J- year old empty heifers £5 10s, weaner cteers 17s to 22s 6d.
