THE ONEWHERO TRAGEDY

DEATH OF MRS KEALS. Per Press (Association. v Auckland, February. 10. The woman Edith Emma Reals, who was murderously attacked near Onewhero, died at the district hospital this evening, without regaining consciousness.

A Herald reporter who is at the scene of the tragedy telephoned tonight that the baby is still missing, and although there are strong indications as to the identity of the assailant, the settlers who are searching have been unable to locate his whereabouts. The lady help, Miss Hunter, who is now in Auckland, stated that as she had done the washing the day before the crime, she went to bed very tired, and slept soundly, hearing no noise. Mrs Reals retired later. When she opened deceased’s bedroom door in the morning she saw blood on the sheet, and a club, about the length of a beer bottle, lying near. She immediately gave the alarm.

SEARCH FOR THE SUSPECT.

Auckland, February 10

Telegraphing late to-night, the Herald representative stated that the whole countryside between Onewhero and the scene of the murderous attack upon Mrs Keals was up and out, alert to apprehend the mysterious perpetrator of the deed. So far no arrest has been made, and not Retrace has been found of the missing baby. Discoveries l|jivo been made which have put the police on definite lines of investigation, and'a suspected individual is being diligently sought. Sub-Inspector W. Mcllevney has taken charge of the case,. The search for the criminal and the missing baby is being made by fifty settlers and Maoris from all parts of the district. They are working day and night in relays, using dogs in the search.

WARRANT FOR ARREST OF HUSBAND’S BROTHER.

Auckland, February 11

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Norman Keals, charged with the murder of Mrs Keals.

Accused is a farmer, aged 29, and (brother of Leslie Keals, husband of the murdered woman.

He has been missing since the tragedy.
