FINES AND IMPRISONMENT IN RECENT WELLINGTON BRAWL.
Per Press .Association
Wellington, February 11
At the Police Court to "'day, Trooper John James Clayton, who was concerned in the brawl in Manners Street on Saturday night, was fined £5 or a month’s imprisonment; for resisting arrest by a constable £2 or seven days; for disorderly conduct while drunk, ordered to pay £2 15s, damage to-the cab in which he was taken to the lock-up, the alternative in the latter case being seven days’ imprisonment.
Robert Porteus Brown, ex-trooper, who was arrested at the same time as Clayton, was also severely dealt with, being sentenced to two months for assaulting a constable, and fined £3 or one month for using obscene language; £5 or one month for assaulting a civilian who was assisting the police; and he was also ordered to pay 255, or undergo three days imprisonment, for damaging a constable’s uniform. His Worship refused to impose a fine in cases of assaulting the police, as he held the latter must be protected as far as possible. He commented on the serious nature of the charges, and said it was deplorable to find so many disgraceful scenes were created" by troopers.
Inspector Hendry said the majority of the men in Trentham Camp who came into town were sober earnest young fellows, who conducted themselves with decorum.
