TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. RECORD MEETING ASSURED. Never previously has such wide interest been displayed in a meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club as in the autumn fixture to be held on Wednesday and Thursday next. With such excellent acceptances and with the line class of horse engaged, the racing promises to be the best seen in Taranaki. Present indications points to a field of thirteen going to the post in the Taranaki Cup, and with such horses as Emperador, Gold size, Royal Irish, Byron, Bertrada, Phosphorus and CourtMartial engaged, a great battle should be waged. More than usual interest is added to the fixture by the inclusion of the Taranaki Stakes, weight-for-age, on the second day. The crack Aucklander, Merry Roe, is practically a certain starter, and the dual Stakes winner at the Egmont meeting, Emperador, is also engaged, and Flying Start, who ran a good second to the latter at Hawera, will have numerous friends. Gladiole, Bisogne and Ineuru are also regarded as almost certain starters. With these horses striving for the honor of winning the First Stakes, the race ought to be worth travelling a long distance to witness. The. acceptors in the Flying are all first-class, and include Hi meter., Wise Bird, Gladiole, Sir Moseley, Tree Lucerne, etc. The club has engaged Mr Van Heck’s lino orchestra. The train arrangements, which have been fixed, are as well suited as possible to sportsmen all over Taranaki and Wanganui. The club is to be congratulated in arranging facilities so as to enable the Wanganui people to witness a really good race meeting. The rain that has recently fallen has freshened up the club’s beautiful property, and the track is in great condition.
(Notes by Cicero). A large number of sports from Stratford intend helping at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Autumn fixture, which opens to-morrow. Despite Egniont form, the majority of events bear an open appearance, and a capital day’s racing should eventuate. No fewer than sixteen horses figure in the Hack Hurdles. Ascalou ran a good race last Wednesday, but is sure to meet with strong opposition from Tirohanga, who will be ridden by McCabe. ' A number of smart sprinters are engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap. Toreador (who won a double at Takapuna), and Play Off, who ran prominently at Egmont on Thursday, should be well supported. Of the eleven acceptors for the Timaru Hack, Sylvan Dale and Combustion read well. Owing to the presence of Emperador possibly some may not face the starter in the contest for the Cup, and taking the form of Mr Greenwood’s horse as a guide, his chance ol annexing the prize, if he goes to the post, may be considered outstandingly good. The best of Cox’s charges (Kaniki oi' Patronymic) should be hard to dispose of in the Mind Welter.
A dozen remain in the Okato Welter. 'l'e Hmi Hou ran a couple of excellent races at Egmont, and must command respect. Thirteen appear in the Flying. On last week’s racing Wisebird, Tree Lucerne and Sir .Moseley appear to have good chances of catching the judge’s eye. The first day’s racing will he brought to a close with the Motorua Hack Handicap, which event has drawn twenty-seven nominators, Fortify and Improve may run well, as they are in fair form at present.
