SUPREME COURT.

WELLINGTON SESSIONS. Pee Pkess Association. Wellington, February !. At the opening of the Supreme Court, His Honor, Mr Justice Chapman, addressing the Grand Jury, said he was pleased to note the smallness of the amount of crime in these times of stress and peril. It was obvious that this country was in a most fortunate position when other countries were suffering from the effects of barbaric invasion, indeed the whole Empire was in a fortunate position, not only in this respect, but in the comparative freedom from internal trouble in the shape of crime. Referring to the Duerkop case, the Judge said it was for the jury to say whether the diversion of goods to a neutral port was intended to facilitate communication with Germany. The real question

was whether accused did intend to get goods into Germany, or whether it was a bona fide transaction with a neutral country.
