Avezzano is under snow, and soldiers are working day and night to maintain an uninterrupted road. Only the dead are now being recovered. . The towns have been converted into vast marshes owing to torrential rains, and the air is becoming pestilential owing to the putrefaction of the carcases under the debris. Twelve thousand refugees are sheltering in Rome.
