The Belgian Refugees Committee lias spent £60,000 in relieving and maintaining 10,500 refugees, and the fund being exhausted, the committee is appealing for further funds. NEW ZEALAND'S SHARE. "MOST FAR-SEEINC ACT OF STATESMANSHIP." PROBLEM OF. THE OVERSEAS. United Pbebs Association. (Received 9.15 a.m.) London, January 28. The warship New Zealand received a full share of the plaudits for her part in the North Sea engagement. Special prominence is being given to a statement by the High Commissioner, Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, who, in writing to Mr Churchill, says: "The gift of New Zealand's ship was a most far-seeing act of statesmanship. Events are showing every day that the young States of the Empire are setting past the period of infancy and are feeling the power of youth in their sinews. They are nobly taking their share in maintaining the integrity of the Empire, and what has already occurred in the way of support from the Dominions is only the beginning of things. Canada will undoubtedly soon follow in the naval lead which has already been given. When the war is over, other conditions will require management. In proportion to what each Dominion is doing will be its voice in the Councils of the Empire, where the first and foremost planks will be efficient defence."
ENGLISH CHARACTERISTIC. REMARKABLE CALMNESS OF LONDONERS IN RAID-TIME. (Received 9.15 a.m.) London, January 29. The Canadian' correspondent notes the calmness with which London received the news of the victories. "There were no signs of public rejoicings," he says. "Of thirty flagpoles in the vicinity of Piccadilly, only five displayed flags. This seeming infference runs parallel with the country's strenuous preparations for increasing work, and puzzled every foreign observer."
