MORE HOWLERS.

In the journal of the Newcastle Teachers’ Association, Mr R. G. Henderson, of the local high school, remarks that it is narrow-minded io view a “howler” as a bad or silly mistake. He claims that to the collector only the artistic Variety of howler is legitimate, and says that a howler should be short, have a humorous incogruity, have a natural touch, and a touch of worldly wisdom. Ho gives a few examples: “Nelson went petrolling up and down the Channel,” a mistake of one letter that shifts Nelson from the days of the threedecker to those of the motor-launch.” Nelson’s death is responsible for this; “A man crept up and got hold of the mast, and shot him. Before lie died ho said to Hardy, “Thank God, he has done his duty.”

As an illustration of the “natural” touch, the following is quoted, “Roberts and Kitchener were in charge of the English, and Baden. Powell in charge of the Boy Scouts.”
