RETURNED BY THE ATHENIC. Per Press 'Association. Auckland, January 22. The following returned by the Athenic:—Sergt. Nevill, Corporal Eddy, Lance-Corporal Choldcroft, Gunners Pearson, Minohall, Barman, Shore, Fraser,, McDonnell, Mayer, Shore Mayer and Finney, Drivers Thompson and Muller, Troopers Bowler, Donaldson, Knight and , Baxter, Privates Bartlett, Parkes, Raid, Abbott, Woodcock,- Foster, Wilkinson, O’Hara, Graham, Ward, Smith, Cruickshank, Carter (2), Gill, Twogood, Rooney, Stokes, James, Lippeatt, Hulme, Manning, Forbes, Harrison, Howat, Brennan, Holford, Holland, Wallace, Chidley, Wykes, Oldham, Scouller, Austin, Gray, Abel, Heberley, Henderson and Fleetwoqd. The troopship Athenic left Alexandria on December 17, and came direct. ■She brings fifty-eight non-commission-ed officers and men from all parts of the force, a portion invalided, some defaulters, and some who refused to be inoculated against typhoid.
Some hours after her arrival the Athenic was floated into Calliope Dock, whereupon Major J. E. Barton, of the district staff, came aboard and took charge of the men. The invalided volunteers, if sufficiently recovered, will re-join the “reinforcements, or, if not, will be sent to their homes. Following is a list of the sick: Troopers C. P. Bowler, 0. L. Knight, and F. L. Baxter; Gunners B. Pearson, P. A. Minshall, W. J. Barman; Driver E. H. Shore; Private C. 0. A. Bartlett, F. L. Parkes, W. L. Reid, S. Abbott, P. T. Woodcock, O. Foster. The remainder will be discharged at Auckland, the authorities taking no further responsibility for them.
TRENTHAM CAMP. The Defence authorities have ordered the following officers into camp at Trentham on probation:— Mounted Rifles-Wellington District.—(One captain and two subalterns.) Captain C. Sonnnervilfe (Reserve of Officers), 2nd Lieutenant T. G. A. Hislop, 6th (Manawatu) Mounted Rifles. Infantijy :< —W|e!|ington 'District.) — (One major with six subalterns.) : Major W. H. Fletcher, 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles). Major A. J. Clarke, 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles), with rank of lieutenant. Lieutenant A. S. T. Butler, 17th (Ruahine) Regiment; Lieutenant J. S. McKay, 17th (Ruahine) Regiment; Second Lieutenant J. McMorran, Rost and Telegraph Corps; Second Lieutenant R. F. Gambrill, 9th (Hawke’s Bay) Regiment; Second Lieutenant G. Henderson, Unattached List (b). Nearly all the officers, and also 80 non-commissioned officers for the oth reinforcements, are at present un. dergoing instruction in camp.
Transfers of men in camp have been made as follow:—From C. Company, 3rd reinforcements, Private W. Dunnett, to C. Company, 4th reinforcements. From D. Company, 3rd reinforcements, Private L. Jordan, to D. Company, 4th reinforcements. From C. Company, 3rd reinforcements, Private J. McKinnon, to D. Company, 4th reinforcements. From Divisional Signallers. Sapper J. G. O’Donnell, to B Company, 3rd reinforcements.
