THE COMMERCIAL BANK. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Sydney, January 20. At the half-yearling meeting of the Commercial Banking Company, the chairman stated that the Bank had taken up a quarter of a million of the British war loan stock, had. advanced £900,000 to the State Govern* ment, and had subscribed liberally to the war funds. Fifty-two of its officers were in the Expeditionary Force, and also thirty to fifty were generally absent in connection with Home Defence. A ten per cent, dividend was declared. PREVALENCE OF DRUNKENNESS. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Sydney, January 20. The Rev. Hammond declares that since the Expeditionary Camps opened, GOO recruits were ejected for drunkenness.
INQUIRY INTO CAUSE OF PRICE OF MEAT. i (Received 9.5 a.m.) Sydney, January 20. In connection with high price of meat, the Premier lias ordered an inquiry respecting the suggestion that it was largely due to the indiscriminate speying of female calves. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Melbourne, January 20. Mr Hughes announces that from next week the machinery of the Federal Government will temporarily be transferred to Sydney where it will deal with several matters of considerable importance.
