BERCHTOLD'S RETIREMENT. MYSTERY OF HIS RESIGNATION. Tih.kb and Sydney Sun Sbsviom. (Received 8.0 a.m.) London, January 15. The Times, in a leader, says: "What the real meaning of Herr Berchtold's retirement may be must remain at present a matter of surmise. The change indicates that something has snapped in the fabric of the dual monarchy. What exactly has given way, whether further and deeper ruptures may follow,, we have not yet materials on which to guess."
PRESS COMMENT. London, January 15. The Daily News, commenting on Count Berchtold's resignation, says: "The state of Austro-Hungary is so perilous that the question is whether she can be saved by anything but an early peace, before more enemies fall on her." London, January 15. The Times, in a leader, on the seizure of Tabriz, says it was a curious and unexpected development. It does not appear to have been a formal military operation, but is evidently the work of Turkish irregulars organised for the invasion of Persia, and destroys a lot of shreds of Turkey's practice that she is waging a holy war.
