i flour is to be increased by £2 or £3 I a ton, it being uncertain which till I the Government proclamation has | been issued. The present price is £l3, and the bakers are anticipating it will rise to £l6, with the assurance of an

immediately increase in bread from 8d and 4d to 9-1 d and 5d for 4lb and 21b

loaves, cash only. They state that, with flour at £l3, there is no profit on bread at 8d and 4.

At a meeting of the Stratford Fire / Brigade last night, matters in connection with the Brigade’s second an-j nual Garden Fete and Carnival, which ( is to be held on February 18th, were discussed.; The proceeds from the entertainment are in aid of a motor fire engine, which the Brigade considers a necessity, considering the large area of the Borough. The Brigade has a small amount in hand, ,and should the Fete prove a success, the engine should arrive shortly afterwards. -A public meeting will be called at the earliest possible moment to appoint a secretary and committees, and arrange other preliminaries. Mr G. Bradley will act as assistant secretary.

A modern invention has been installed in the Tokomairiro (Milton, Otago) Presbyterian Church. The instrument comprises a telephone transmitter, of exceedingly strong capacity, which is placed under the reading desk of t|ie pulpit. Wires are connected therewith to any part of the church, and those afficted with deafness can attach a patent telephone receiver over their heads and listen to the sermon with distinctness and without any discomfort. Wires can also be connected to private vesirenc.es, and bed-ridden persons can listen to the service whilst reclining in their homes. Already one private outside connection has been installed.

In connection with the demonstration by the boys of the Salvation Army’s Home at Eltham in the Stratford Town Hall on Wednesday evening next (the proceeds of which are to go the Belgian Relief Fund) it may be mentioned that a large audience at Eltham last Wednesday evening were delighted with the singing, reciting, and drilling of the boys } and £SO was added to the Fund.
