The master butchers discussed the question of the dearness of meat, and decided to ask the Commodities Commission to inquire into the abnormally high and sudden rise in price and the short supplies of stock. Speakers claimed that the position was largely due to the operations of exporters, that the cold storages, were full of carcases, and hinted at a ring among growers and exporters. Others opposed the Government poking its nose into people's affairs. Suggestions in favor of an export-tax and co-operative meat marketing received little support. TTie retail prices of beef in the city are now sixpence and one shilling, and mutton is selling at fourpence and eightpence. The prices are dearer in tlie suburbs. THE WHEAT CRAB (Received 9.45 a.m.) Sydney, January 8. The Farmers' and Settlers' Association is awaiting legal opinion as to whether the Government action in seizing the wheat is ultra vires of the Commonwealth Constitution; meantime, it has advised its branches regarding the working of compensation claims. So far, 150 appeals have been lodged against the price paid by the Government, while the Association has received two thousand appeals. The inter-State Commission to-day hears a Commonwealth application for an interim injunction to restrain -the New South Wales Governent from selling or removing any wheat. , ~ ~..

FLGURMILUNC FIRM AND ITS CREDITORS. (Received 9.45 a.m.) Melbourne, January 8. As an outcome of the wheat situation the firm of Edward Davey and Sons, flourmillers, has obtained the Court's sanction to call a meeting, at which it is proposed to submit a proposal to the creditors on the basis of 10s in the £. The total liabilities are under £30,000. CONFERENCE OF WORKERS DISCUSS UNIONISM.

The Railway Workers Association in conference voted in favour of submitting the proposal for amalgamation with the Australian Workers Union to a plebiscite. Supporters argued that the present system of sectional trade unionism was unable successfully to combat the encroachment of capitalism and amalgamation of .all unions was necessary. The central council of employers of Australia strongly protested against preference heing given to unionists in the fitting ..put of transports and other Government work in connection with the war.
