SPORTING.

STRATFORD RACING CLUB. RACES TO-MOROW. (Notes by Cicero.) Tlie Stratford Racing Club’s annual race meeting will open to-morrow, and everything points to tin! probability that the gathering will be by far the biggest and best this progressive Club has ever held. During the past twelve months, encouraged by the great success of last race meeting the Club has effected many important improvements to its course and appointments, and has made some great strides in the direction of providing further paddock and grandstand accommodation, both inside and outside the enclosure. The entrance has also been entirely changed, and special paddock accommodation made for the ever-increasing army of motorcars. The fine new totalisator-house is most up-to-date in every detail, and is capable of handling very large investments with expedition and quite without inconvenience to patrons.

As to the sport itself the entries, in all events, are quite above the (Average, and as the course is in really £ood condition and most of the visiting horses are in Stratford, fine fields "should face the starter and some exciting racing be seen. The secretary, Mr Alfred Coleman, and the officials of the Chib have left no stone unturned in their efforts to cater for the convenience of horseowners, and the sporting- public, so that the greatest success is merited. The programme comprises eight events each clay, and will open at noon tomorrow, January Ist. 1915, with the Tariki Welter Handicap, of lOOsovs. Seven Furlongs.

st. Ib. st. lb. Florist ... 9 9 Avena ... 8 8 Bivouac ... 9 7 Armature... 8 7 Sylvan Dale 9 7 Red Coral 8 7 Miralma ... 9 3 Paraoa ... 8 7 Patronata ... 811 Glentiillock 8 7 Yladiau ... 8 9 Captain Miro 8 7 Rosalys ... 8 8 Iceberg ... 8 7 Florist has also accepted in the Hurdles, and seeing that the chestnut raced over the battens at the recent meeting held at New Plymouth, it is more than likely that we will find her a starter for the Hurdles. Sylvan Dale lias gone up Hlbs for his win on Saturday, but the .rise may not stop him. Patronata is very well at present, and ran well each day at New Plymouth. Sylvan Dale and Patronata should provide a good race. The. next event to be decided will be the Borough Stakes, 100 Sovs, 4* furlongs. (To start 12.45 p.m.) Te/, Ban, Zian, Arras, Wio. letta, Flint, Wild Daisy, Fortify, Decide, Red Hat, Top Twig, Veto. Vestalis, Go Qn. Mary Kilcheran, Hine. kaha, Miss Potae, Tirana, Oblikoff. Fidessa, Joy Bells, Trombone, Lupinatrix, Formulate, Tiora, Joey, Tah6hi, Con Guard. As this race is for maidens at time, of starting Zion is not eligible. In her absence Veto, Wild Daisy artd Wioletta should run well.

We now come to the principal event, the STRATFORD CUP HANDICAP,

Of 250SOVS. One Mile and a quarter. (To start 1.30 p.m.) st. lb. st. lb. Toa Tere 9 4 Minora ... 7 7 Charminade 9 2 Fore ... 7 7 Draft ... 9 0 Bercola ... 7 4 Patronymic 812 Sweet Van 7 3 Invader ... 8 4 Cordon ... 7 2 Quo Vadis 7 9 Harbor Light 612 Minora broke down on Saturday and will not start, and Fore will probably be reserved for the Midhirst Handicap. The top-weight, Toatere, was supported by his party each day at Now Plymouth; he ran badly bn Saturday but was quite a different horse on Monday, when he won. He is evidently a horse of moods, and the writer does not fancy him in a race over a distance. ' Charminade, who cost his present owners £6OO, and who have persevered with him IS months, made his first return last week, and .may go on winning. His party who were very confident threw in for a. good win over his dual vie tory, and are just as sanguine about to-morrow’s result. Draft was short of work at Taranaki, and cannot be stripped at his best to-morrow, a very necessary factor in a race of tins description. Patronymic, in his only start, ran well on Saturday. Invader, who is remarkably well handicapped, ran second at Palmerston on Monday, and is evidently returning to form. When at his best this gelding runs a fair race over a distance. The next in handicap, Quo Vadis, is hard to understand. Qn the track he is capable of extending horses such as Wild Lupin, Astor and Co., but invariably fails badly in public. Bercola is looking well, but is hardly brilliant enough. Sweet Van, who raced at Taranaki, was affected by the heat, and her connections expect her to do better 'at Stratford. Cordon is a nice colt, and should be greatly benefltted by the racing at New Plymouth. He was badly stopped when running well the second day. Harbour Light will put up l2lbs overweight to secure the services of R. E. Brown. Cordon, Quo Vadis, and Chaminadp are a likely trio, i This brings us to the, Railway Handicap, of lOOsovs. Five Furlongs. (To start 2.15 p.m.)

st. lb. . st. lb. Calais ... 9 4Tiora ... 7 12 The Dodger 8 9 Magenta ... 7 10 Lady Ann 8 3 Vestal is ... 7 9 iPatroon ... 8 3 Flying Camp 7 7 Bay Paul ... 8 1 Flying Queen 7 7 Formulate 8 0 Paraoa ... 7 7 Lady Dales- Miss Fisher 7 7 ford ... 713

Calais may be reserved for the Flying Handicap. In his absence, The

Dodger appears to , be in a class- by himself. Lady Dalesford showed pace early in the Spring, but afterwards lost all form.

The next race to he decided is the Ohura Hprdlc Handicap, of iSOsovs.

One Mile and three-quarters, (To start 3 p.m.)

st. lb. ' et. lb. Styrax ... 11 5 MiHbanks ... 9 5 Maiiawakaha 10 8 Advancer ... 9 4 Florist ... 10 7 Ngapoto ... 9 3 Katua ... 10 Sea Plane 9 3 Capt. Macky 10 Chaban ... 9 3 Tirohanga ...' 9 Tarera ... 9 0 This is a fairly goou nefd, and the penalty should stop Styrax. Manawakaha jumps well, and in his first attempt at Wanganui last May gave a really good display, although the distance may bother him. Florist, although looking well, ran at Xew Plymouth, and the same applies to Katua ,although the latter was putting in great track work previous co the meeting. Capt. Macky has a great reputation. • He ran well at Feilding last month, and afterwards won at Woodvilie, beating a good held. Of the lighter weights, Tiro, hanga strikes one as the most likely; in fact, with, say, McCabe, in the saddle, I would look no further for .a winner. Katua, Capt. Macky, Tirohanga should be well supported.

The next event is the Midhirst Handicap, of 125sovs. One Mile and 110yds. (To start 3.40 p.m.) st. lb. it. lh. Patronymic 9 0 Sweet Van 7 3 John Willie 8 4 Cordon ... 7 3 Invader ... 8 1 Fore ..71 Quo Vadis 711 IVlahlstock* 7 0 Bercola ... 7 4 Harbor Light 613 As a number of horses figuring in this -event have a prior engagement in the Cup, the held will be considerably reduced. Fore will probably be reserved for this event, and the chestnut will take some beating.

We will next have the pleasure of seeing the gentlemen jockeys in the Farmers’ Plate,, 75 sovs; 1 mile and 110 yards. (To start 4.20 p.m.)

Bay Prince, Black Queen, Warea, Deemster, Webb Shell, Direct Charge, Chief Officer, Silver Pin, Rosalys, Harbour Light, Idol, Armature, Hinekaha, Patronata, Durano, Silver Flood. On Taranaki form, Patronata and Armature read well.

The curtain will be rung down on the first day’s racing with the

Flying Handicap., of iSOsovs. Six Furlongs. (To start 5.5 p.m.)

st. lb. st. lb. Calais ... 9 0 Project ... 712 Crawford 8 11 Bay Paul ... 7 / Sylvan Dale 8 o Shaiidon Bells 7 3 Glenroy ... 8 3 Vladian ... 7 0 Quo Vadis... 713 Avena ... 612 Martingale 713 ~ Calais, on Taranaki running, is well in. and must take settling. Glenroy is reputed to be remarkably fast, and if caught in a galloping humor will possibly beat the top-weight.

An attempt was made at Alexandra Park yesterday afternoon by M. Edwards’ trotting horse Dillon Bell to lower the record of 2min 8 3-ssec. Dillon Bell, unpaced, registered 2min 15sec for the journey. During the running of the Auckland Trotting Cup,-at Epsom, the southern horse, Jewel Chimes, fell, his driver, D. Dyhain, being thrown heavily. On being conveyed to the consulting-room an examination by Dr. Murphy disclosed the fact that Nyhan had received a dislocated shoulder and a severe shaking.
