(Received 10.30 a.m.) Melbourne, December 31. Mr Cook, Liberal leader, in maintaining the necessity of increasing the number of reinforcements, and commenting on the Noav Zealand quotas, said: “If we sent the same proportion as NeAv Zealand Ave should have already despatched 60,000 instead of 30,000, and Ave should require 9000 monthly, being just three times the number iiOAV contemplated. We are much behind the other Dominions in supplying men for land forces.” Mr Pearce (Minister for Defence), describes Mr Cook’s utterances, as “hot air,” and points out that the resources of the Commomvealtl? are hard put to arm and equip 100,000 men in a reasonable time.
