Russia

THE GERMANS HEMMED IN. Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, December 13. The Russian headquarters report that the Germans, despite all their efforts, are unable to advance towards either Warsaw or Cracow. • POLAND DEVASTATED. POSITION OF KALISCH WORSE THAN LOUVAIN. United Press association. Rome, December 14.

The Messageros’ correspoudeiit at Warsaw says: “German militarism in Poland has destroyed, sacked, and murdered. The situation surpasses that in Belgium, for there is the additional horror of the Poles fighting each other, there being half a million in the Russian army and half a million with the Austrians, and a hundred thousand in the German ranks. The fate of Kalisch is worse than that of Louvain. Two detachments of Germans, owing to a mistake, fought each other. In order to conceal their error, they accused the inhabitants of firing on the Germans, and bombarded the town, killing 500 inhabitants. They hanged another 400, including women and children, and sacked the city. The Germans destroyed 500 villages and twenty small towns. Famine prevails everywhere, and dysentery and cholera are rampant.”
