SUNDRY SPORTS.
With reference to the chopping contest to take place in Victoria Park on the 19th inst. (Saturday next), a few particulars of the contestants and their records will be interesting. J. E. Shewry was horn in Stratford, and is now 25 years of age, standing 6ft high, and weighing ISstone. He began his career as an axeman, only four years ago, but since then has been very successful, having, among other things, won the New Zealand Axeman’s Cup at Eltham, and he at present .holds the championship for twofeet standing blocks, having captured this honor at the chopping carnival in connection with the Auckland Exhibition.
His opponent, W. Pech, is a giant ii stature, standing 6ft 6 Jin, and weighing ITstone. He was born in New South Wales, but has lived chiefly in Victoria, and is twenty-eight years ot age. He is recognised as champion axeman of Australia, besides holding the New Zealand championship in 18in blocks, won at Taumaranui, and has been very successful in handicap events from back marks. The two men have met repeatedly in both championships and handicaps, with varying degrees of success, and the coming contest is to show definitely which is the better of the two. The public may rely on witnessing a straight, clean, battle-royal, each man putting up £SO of his own money, and both are kncrwn as straight goers, as well as keen rivals.
