SETTLERS WATCH BUILDINGS , AND STOCK. Per Press Association. Gisborne, December 14. A large area of the Mangaporke district was swept by log and grass fires, and several liomesteads were endangered. Settlers have been up day and night watching buildings and stock, but no damage was sustained.

FLAX CROP DAMAGED.

Carterton, December 14

The fire swept over a portion of the Mangahuia flax swamp at Longbush, where Toogood’s mill is working. The standing crop present being cut was not touched, but the flax cut three years ago and growing again was badly scorched up.
