A proclamation has heen issued, prohibiting an increase in the price of drinks and tobacco.
DEFICIT OF A MILLION.
Melbourne, Decemher 10
In the Assembly Mr Peacock delivered a War Budget speech, in which he forecasted a deficit of one million. He proposes to cover the deficit by an addition to the income tax and ssta'mp duties from 1915 to 1919, and the issue of Treasury bonds.
GENERAL.
Sydney, December 10
Fanners are rushing large quantities of wheat across the Murray, to secure the higher prices in Victoria-. Captain Oswald Watt, formerly of Sydney, describing his experiences as a French military airman, says tlu Germans have broken practically all .the laws ,of civilised tvarrare. One outcome of the war is a considerable increase in Lbo mnnuer of vacant houses in Sydney and suburbs, though the value of property keeps up. Business is slow. There is mucn outcry against the new tariff'. Business men freely admit that they are passing the increase on to the consumer. Latest lists show that many noted cyclists have been killed at the fiont, including Thys, Buysse, Pouplain and Garrigan.
