Alders, formerly German Consul at Sunderland, who was indicted for high treason, pleaded that he ■ was unaware of the declaration of war when he assisted to repatriate reservists. His idea on August 4th was that the Germans’ ultimatum to Belgium would be withdrawn. Eyen on the morning of the fifth nobody told him that England was involved.
AN ALLEGED SPY. , 1 f r fnr ' (Received 2 p.m.) London, December 9. Paul Geprgo Wentzp}!, a Gorman, was indicted at the Assizes for spying. Ho was found in possession of an electric flash lamp, sketches of Grey Point, Port Orlock, the signal station Belfast, drawings of heavy guns and maps of the harbour. •
