ELTHAM’S HOLIDAY ATTRACTION
BOXING DAY CARNIVAL. The Axemen’s Carnival at Eltham promises to be more largely attended than ever this year. The New Zealand Axemen’s Association, the controlling body of this form of sport it; the Dominion, has received splendid nominations for the various events, and has received, word from Mr C Miley, who is entrusted with the provision of the blocks, that he is obtaining fine timber from the forest at Horopito, possibly the finest that the Association has even offered to competitors. For two days of good clean sport, honest and manful endeavor it is doubtful whether this meeting can he equalled. The sport itself enthrals the onlooker to a degree unknown in other branches of athletics, and the skill of many of the competitors with axe and saw is simply marvellous. In addition to the world’s champion chop, N.Z. Champion Chop* the Axemen’s Cup of £l3O, Single and Double-handed Sawing Championships of the World and Australasia, respectively, there are numerous handicap events. Running and cycling events relieve the waits between the ring events, and a tug-of-war this yeai promises to add to the excitement. There will bo, of course, excursion fares on both days.
