THE P. AND 0. COMPANY.
REPORT ANO BALANCE-SHEET
United Press Association. (Received 8.50 a.m.) London, December 7
The Peninsular and Oriental Company made a profit of £359,703, and carried forward £68,703. The directors’ report states that immediately war was declared, the Admiralty commandeered nearly half the Company’s fleet, amounting to upward of 200,000 tons. Recently there had been a certain amount of revival in the value of exports to India and Australia, but not to China and Japan. A formidable obstacle to trade would be tho war insurance, for which the Company paid £31,000 in eight weeks. The cost of running the ships increased in every direction except in canal dues, but considering the Company’s contingent fund was £*150,000 and the amount of ordinary reserve £1,374,000, the directors feel justified in recommending a dividend and bonus.
