KOHURATAHI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Thursday night Mr J. B. Hiue, the Government candidate, held a meeting in the Hall,’‘Kohuratahij with the of placing his policy before the electors: his policy, because Mr Hine does not in any way bind himself to follow blindly the policy Of the party. After speaking for a few minutes on the war, he went on to point out that Ife is not in favor of holding the election during the war or at any rate for at least twelve months, and then went on to say that his party has been accused of failing to reduce the borrowing. This, he pointed out, although well under the figures of the previous administration, was unavoidable, as the last Government left loans' which had to be redeemed while still the necessaiy ex penditure was .going on. Mr /Hine, among other things, said that he is in favor of increasing the rate of interest to local money-lenders, i.e., Post Office Savings-Bank depositors, bringing this• nearer■ the same, rate as paid for the loans raised r at Horae. -He is in favor of legislation for at least minimising strikes by a secret fiallot. He then -spoke at length on ; ! variousi subjects-,’.-including- election of Upper 1 House members, Education Bill, increase of .salaries* administration, old age pensions, military pensions, widows’ pensions, taxation, and the public buildings sinking fund. At the conclusion of his address, questions were put by Messrs Cameron, Hill and McCutchan. Mr E. Hill then proposed a vote of thanks and confidence, which was seconded, and the meeting closed.
