DEFENCE DEPARTMENT’S CASE
DISMISSED.
Wellington, November 13
When a young man was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with failing to attend parades it transpired that he was on duty at the time guarding German prisoners on Somes Island. Counsel for defendant strongly criticised the action of the Department, and the Magistrate dismissed the information, but refused to allow costs though hq agreed that a serious blunder had been made. It is understood that the officials responsible tor the prosecution were unaware that the defendant was serving on Somes Island, as ho signed on under different authorities and had not replied to notifications served on him re nonattendance at parados.
