DOUGLAS NOTES.
(From a Correspondent.) A social evening, held in the Public Hall, at Douglas, on Wednesday evening, in , aid of the British and Belgian Poor Relief FuiM, was very successful. The Rev. C. Aker presided. Songs were rendered by Mrs Thomas and Messrs Jones and Young, which were greatly appreciated. The Rev. H. W. Smith delivered an interesting and instructive lecture on social work in England, dealing mainly with the operations of the Church Army. The address, which dealt with experiences of the dark side of life, showed the value of the good work to the life of the individual and nation, and was listened to with interest and attention. In conclusion, Mr Smith showed the tremendous strain on the resources of philanthropic institution owing to the war crisis. Refreshments were handed round, and the chairman announced that tlie collection resulted in £l3 9s being gi'en, with the probability of more donations to follow, owing to the inclemency of the weather preventing a number from being present. The local school children are preparing for a patriotic concert to he given" shortly. It is understood that the children are desirous of foregoing the usual school prizes, and giving the money to the Belgian Poor Fund. It is earnestly hoped that the Education Department will hasten the necessary addition 'to the school, to relieve the crowded state of the school, for the sake of the children’s health and the convenience of the teachers, there being only a curtain dividing the departments, also the erection of a much-needed teacher’s residence. It is also hoped that the school building at Kiore will soon he erected. The present old building is most unhealthy and. a disgrace to the Education Department.
