Another Maori war veteran has passed away in the person of Mr John Patrick Ward. The late Mr Ward had a chequered career during the Maori w.aV. He, with the late Mr M. O’Donnell (Hawera), was in charge of Te \ Whiti and Tolm during their detention in the South Island after they were arrested at Parihaka. Mr Ward wrote a history of the doings of his captives, which had a large circulation (states , the Tokaora correspondent of the Ha- * •• wera Star). Latterly Mr Ward had suffered for some time with kidney trouble, and resided for a time with one of his daughters in Hawke’s Bay.*He leaves ,a .widow and a grotfn-nj)”. family. Mrs Dan. Hughes, of Mahaia, is a sister, and Mr D. J. Hughes a nephew.
