BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, when there wore present: The Mayor (Mr W. P. Kirkwood), and Crs. E. McK. Morisou, J. B. Richards, J. W. Boon, N. J. King, J. Masters, T. Header. REPORTS. Works Committee. The Committee reported as follows: Matters referred to committee for report : 1 Removal of bank opposite Messrs Smith's and Dwyer's residences, Cordelia Street. —Your Committee' beg to recommend that this work be carried out provided half the cost is deposited with the Council. Estimated cost £lB. 2 Approach to Mr E. Jackson's Portia Street North.—Your Committee recommend that this work be carried out provided Mr Jackson pays half the cost. Estimated cost £5. 3 Crossing, Portia Street, south side of Regan Street, and diverting water from south side of Regan Street across to Hamlet Street.—Your Committee recommend that this work bo carried out. Estimated cost £lB. 4 Holidays.—Your Committee recommend that the holidays as observed in the past be adhered to, viz., Offices closed on the following dates: Christmas Eve to sth January inclusive, Good Friday to Easter Tuesday inclusive, King's Birthday, Labor Day and any holidays generally observed by the town. In addition, the office staff has two weeks' holiday annually when convenient. Overseer has three weeks annually, and is otherwise practically always on duty. Workmen, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Ist and 2nd January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labor Day, Show Day.
5 Ariel Street North.—Your Committee will report on this question at the Council meeting. Owing to the disarrangement of work occasioned by tlio fire, the following matters Avill he reported at next meeting:— Report on corporation yard, Juliet Street, South of Celia Street; Hollow, Juliet Street, North of Seyton Street, Bridge Cordelia Street; Pound and stables, Juliet Street, between Regan and Seyton Street. The report was adopted, with the exception of the reference to holidays. The Mayor said that the Committee had visited Ariel Street North, and he moved that the Overseer's scheme to spend £2O in forming an approach from Pembroke Road and form a surface footpath be adopted. Cr. Masters seconded.
Cr. Morison moved, as an amendment, that.the Overseer be asked to supply an estimate of the cost of' forming a footpath on the permanent level from Orlando Street to Ariel Street and round to the boardinghouse.
This was lost, and the motion was also lost.
Cr. King then moved that the Overseer be asked to supply an estimate of the cost of running a filling across the gully north of Seytou Street and to provide reasonable access. This was carried. Overseer, The Overseer reported:—l beg to report on the progress of the works for the past month, as under:— 1 A footpath and side formation has been made in Cordelia Street at its junction with Antonio Street. f 2 The footbridge in Juliet Street South of Seytou Street has been removed, and the hollow filled in. 3 Some side formation has been done in Juliet Street between Regan Street and Seytou Street. , 4 All trees on the southern boundary, of septic tank paddock have been topped. 5 The work of kerbing and channelling Fenton Street West is in hand.
6 22 cubic yards of sand have been carted from the river for kerbing and channelling work. 7 Some stripping has been done at the septic tank gravel pit.
8 Grass seed has been sown on Seylon Street and at the abattoirs, 9 250 cubic yards of boulders have been crushed.
10 W. Green has completed his contract in Orlando Street South.
11 E. Chard has completed the gravelling on Portia Street south of Romeo Street. 12 The staff are .ft present engaged in clearing the remains of the- municipal huildings. 13 One water service has been put in. Abattoir Manager. The Abattoir Manager reported:— I have the honor to submit my report on the working of the Abattoir durin the month of October, 15X14 : The following stock were slaughtered : Cows 78, heifers 13, oxen 6, calves 1 sheep 282, lambs 13, pigs 26, tripes prepared 68, cow heels 24. Stock con. demned: Cows, 2 wholly, 6 partially; heifers, 1 partially; pigs, 1 wholly. No. 4 paddock has been sown down with grass and chain harrowed. Lighting Committee. The Lighting Committee reported: Re E. Jackson's request.—Your Committee beg to recommend that the lamp on the south side of Regan Street be shifted to the north side at -tho intersection of Portia and Ham let Streets. GENERAL. An application from 0. Murray for permission to tether a cow at night
in Cordelia was refused
, Cr. King said that two sections of road needed attention—Fenton Street from the school to Cordelia 'Street, and Cloton Road from the Hayinarket to the bowling green.—The matter was refrrd to h Works Committee.
Mr J. C. Cameron, M.1.C.E., wrote offering his services in devising an improved water .supply for the Borough.—Received. The secretary of the Racing Club wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the northern end of Cordelia Sreet, which carries race traffic—Referred to the Works Committee.
Madame Bernard wrote, again asking for reconsideration of her lease of the Town Hall.—After consideration it was decided to reduce the rent by £1 per week, those voting, against the motion being Crs. Reader, Richards and Morison. Cr. Fredric notified the Council that he would be unable to attend that night's meeing, and therefore asked that the committee's report re holidays be held over till next meeting, he having moved that the matter be reported on. Messrs T. A. W. Nicholson and R. T. Hudson, chemists, forwarded a requisition asking that the Council take steps to have the hours of closing for chemists made as folkows: — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 6 p.m., Saturday 9 p.m., with the exception of Christmas and New Year Eves, when closing shall be at the chemist's option.
