FRENCH GUNS PLAY HAVOC. United Press Association. Paris, October 28. Details of the destruction of three German batteries north of the Aisne show that a Uhlan patrol discovered a French convoy and posted three batteries commanding the road. The French discovered the trap, and sent two. batteries of 75-centimetre guns which silenced the German guns in a few minutes, wreaking terrible havoc. The guns were blown to fragments, and two hundred dead lay around them. OPERATIONS IN ALSACE. London, October 28. The Times' Berne correspondent reports that the Germans have been largely reinforced in Alsace, and the French have strengthened the surroundings of Uelfort.
HOW A FRENCH DRAGOON HELD THE BRIDGE. (Received 10.0 a.m.) Paris, October 29. A Dragoon marksman who was stationed behind a fence near a swing bridge at Sailly, near Lille, with two comrades loading for him, was ordered to repol tho enemy without blowing up the bridge. Two German Lancors appeared, and were shot down, then three mot the same fate, and later five Uhlans were killed. Altogether there were 30 of the enemy dead, which effectively prevented advance for the whole day.

Corporal Jolley, of the King's Royal Rifles, narrates that during the retreat from- Mons, the Germans at- ! tempted to blow tip a bridge over the JMarne, and his regiment was ordered to recapture it. Prince Maurice of jliattenburg was the first man across the bridge, and he daringly searched the house on the other side alone. GERMAN LOSSES AMOUNT TO 2000. Paris, October 38. The German losses at Craonne, mentioned in to-day's communique, were 2000 killed and wounded. The French casualties were only 100.
