THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.

CANON GARLAND'S EV. ,'GE. £Paa PiiKfiu AaaooiAiioN.j Wellington, October 21. The Education Committee resumed taking evidence on the Bible-in-Scnools question this morning. Capon Garland, organising secretary oi the Bible-in-Schools League, submitted evidence covering '2'3o printed folios. He pointed out that New Zealand alone stood in the Englishspeaking world as making no provision lor religious instruction in the edu-

cation system. The Australian teachers were not opposed to the system, and had not expressed approval simply by tear of the Department. A large number of \ isitors to New Zealand, when interviewed by reporters, expressed approval of the Australian system. He referred to the precedents of Switzerland, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland in justification of the taking of a referendum. The referendum principle was already accepted in Xew Zealand on prohibition, weekly holidays and certain municipal affairs. Parliament was only being -asked to give effect to a principle already recognised as applicable to various matters of conscience. He traversed 'the evidence given by Uishop Cleary, Professor Hunter, Mr Caughley, and the Rev J). C. Bates. He also quoted voluminously from various divines and authorities upon education.

A GARLAND OF EVIDENCE. ' Wellington, October 22. The Bible-in-Schools committee, alter Canon Garland had read evidence for two hours, decided to take the remainder of the 235 pages as read. An objection was raised to a portion oi the evidence, which consisted of a collection of the evidence of other people. ft was ultimately decided it could be put in as an appendix. Bishop Cleary objected to Canon Garland lumping together the opponents of the Bill as one part}'. Professor Hunter and the Rev. Bates concurred.
