Seven contractors tendered for the fitting out of the Verdala as a troopship. The successful tender, it is understood, was close on £7OOO. A cable has been received by the Russian Consul at Wellington from the Imperial Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the effect that the Czar has consented to allow all Russian reservists desirous of doing so to join the New Zealand expeditionary forces. A large gathering of citizens was held at Auckland yesterday to inaugurate a campaign for assisting the Belgians. A strong committee was appointed, and various schemes for raising funds were discussed. Subscriptiens are pouring in to the funds organised by the aclingConsul for Belgium and the New Zealand Herald. The sum of £23,000 will probably be the objective of the movement.
