THE WHOLE OF THE COUNTRY SHAKEN. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] United Press Association. Athens, October 17. An earthquake caused great damage at Thebes and many were injured. There was serious damage at Chalcis. The whole of Greece was shaken. Many houses ii} Athens were cracked. Thebes is the modern Thjva, tie chief city of Boetia, and one of the most famous places of ancient Greece. It is situated 30 miles north-west of Athens. The present town is a poor and smill place, with a population of about 5090.

Chalcris, or Negrepont, is a mantime town, capital of Fuboea, eighteen miles from Thebes.
