A garden party and dance has been arranged to be held at Ngaere on Thursday afternoon and evening, the proceeds to bo devoted to the fund for the relief of the Poor of Britain and Belgium.
An excellent programme has been arranged for the, monthly free social under the auspices of the Salvation Army, to be held in the Army Hall this evening. The chair is to be taken by Adjutant Gray, of Auckland.
The Defence Rifle Club will hold the usual drill this evening, picking up arms at the Defence Office at 7.30 o’clock. A good muster is particularly desired as important matters are to be discussed after drill.
The Dominion says that the cheese factories in South Taranaki are now beginning to pour their products into the West Coast Refrigerating Company’s stores at Patea at the rate of about 1000 crates per day. This represents a value of about £30,000 per week. The staff were busy fast Thursday loading up the Hawera for Wellington with cheese for the Ruahine. This liner is expected to take away nearly fifteen thousand crates of cheese, valued at least at £75,000. The Corinthic is taking seven thousand cases of cheese and three thousand boxes of butter.
Fishermen in the Stratford district seem to be having an excellent time this season, the good bags secured indicating that the rivers have been well stocked with the right knd of fish. Despite the inclement weather yesterday several good catches were recorded, among them being the following: J. Wing Kee 17, F. Collins 9, J. W. Jones 6, S. Campbell 10, H. Campbell G, C. Lawrence and mate 10. A sportsman with a turn for high finance says; “The fishing is extraordinarily good for so early in the season, and I have taken so many fish already that I don’t care if I never catch another, as, estimating the worth of each fish at a shilling, I have caught enough to pay for my year’s license.”
At the meeting called by the Mayor on Friday evening last for the purpose of forming a committee to organise the Belgian and Poor, of Great Britain Relief Fund, His Worship stated that as he was chairman of the Patriotic War Fund Committee, he could not, in view of the necessity of both committees being efficient working bodies, accept office on the executive of the new committee to be formed that night. He was also of opinion that none of the executive members of the Patriotic War Fund Committee should be absorbed by the new committee until such time as it was clear that no further expeditionary forces would be required. Several of the Patriotic Y\ r ar Fund executive \ members were present at Friday’s evening’s meeting and agreed with the Mayor’s remarks.
The Morea’s mails have been delivered in London.
There was a good audience at His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday afternoon to witness the excellent programme prepared for the performance in aid of the Belgian relief fund, and the fund benefited to the extent of £6 Is 6d.
A Wellington Press Association telegram to-day states: At the Supreme Court to-day, the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) sentenced Charles Ridley Cooke to six month’s imprisonment for embezzlement of the sum of £228 collected from various firms while employed as secretary to the Marton branch of the Farmers’ Union.
District dairy factories make the following payments to-morrow for September milk-—Stratford £4286, Ngaere £2240, Lowgarth £I3OO, Cardiff £l2ll. These pajmieuts are at the rate of 10$d per lb in the case of the Stratford factory, and lOd in the case of the others. The advance is on the low side, but this course is held to he prudent in view of the war. If the season is as successful as, in a general way, there is every reason to expect it will he, a further payment will be made during the season. At present companies have to exercise prudence, there being a possibility of irregular shipment later on.
