PORTUGAL AND BRITAIN.
Portugal's population on December 1, 1911, was estimated at 5,957,985. Her army is raised by conscription, divided into three categories, active, reserve, and territorial. Service begins at 20. Ten years are passed in the active army, ten in the reserve, and five in the territorial/ The peace strength was 30,000, but the war strength will be something about 150,000. The Navy is not by any means up to date. In 1911 she had but one battleship, while of five protected cruisers , the largest, was of 4000 tons, and the gunboat 4 s, torpedo boats, etc., were of old standard. However, great support will be Recorded the Allies owing to Portugal's ports, particularly in her -African and colonial possessions, not now providing refuge for the German navy and shipping.
