Mr Robertson writes:—"! journeyed to Auckland on the Saturday prior to the division in question, to fulfil an important engagement, in tending to be back in Wellington on the Tuesday afternoon. On the journey North 1 must have caught a chill, as 1 was violently ill immediately after my arrival in Auckland, and was confined to bed during most of my staj there. I was unable to leave on the Monday evening as intended, and onh managed to leave on the Tuesday a) noon, arriving in Wellington on Wednesday morning. At the time, there fore, when the Licensing Bill was be fore the Committee of the House, ' was travelling towards Wellington, and this, I hope, will prove a satisfactory explanation of my absence from the division on clause 2 of the Bill."
